Michael Cooke unleashes the magnificent album ‘Midnight Call’.

The 16th of June has forever been immortalised as ‘Bloomsday’, the date on which the entirety of James Joyce’s masterpiece ‘Ulyesses’ takes place. However, there is now another reason why there is great significance associated with the 16th of June. It is the day that Michael Cooke will release his seminal album ‘Midnight Call’. Within the album’s lead single ‘Around Here’, Cooke showcases his innate ability to combine juxtaposing musical styles to create a novel and distinctive sound only he can make.

‘Around Here’ begins with a heavy, thumping, pounding drum beat which immediately demands your complete attention. Cooke then introduces a gentle acoustic guitar riff, making the listener feel as if they’re gently gliding on water.

In his youth, Cooke was initially set to become an Olympic athlete, however fate intervenient in the form of a devastating injury that hindered his chances of achieving his sporting dreams. However, Cooke would find an emotional outlet in music as he says:

“So many people let life pass them by and get caught up in group identity because they are scared of knowing themselves. I think once you start down the road of knowing yourself there’s no going back and let’s be honest it’s
pretty terrifying you see a lot of things about yourself you don’t like and it’s very hard to ignore”.
– Michael Cooke

Cooke has had an enviable music career as he has eloquently crafted music for television programmes and films available on Netflix. This album is just the start for Cooke, and I, for one, cannot wait to see what he has in store for us next.

Thai-Chilean singer-songwriter Araya releases powerful debut album ‘Atlas’

Brooklyn based, Thai-Chilean singer songwriter Araya has released the exceptional debut album ‘Atlas‘. Covering themes from inclusivity and identity, the the LP features leading track ‘Color Palette’, which has over 340,000 Spotify Streams already. Gaining support from blogs and magazines across the web, ‘Atlas’ is a 14-track album which drives listeners through a world of musical introspection.

Speaking about his journey, Araya quotes, “I think my music is mainly inspired by curiosity to forever learn and further investigate certain parts of myself that have led me to a deeper understanding of my place here. I think music has provided me a space to dissect my thoughts and experiences in an organic way that is lasting. The drafts of both my perspective and choices come to represent me and my journey.”

“Atlas” weaves it’s audience through an alternative pop cum hip-hop soundscape, ready to grab your attention and never let it go. Speaking on the actual album, Araya added:

“Atlas is my personal map/guide to self-discovery; each major event, revelation and freedom has led to
furthering ever changing versions of both myself and my art. As the project neared completion, I had felt like a weathered superhero amongst my own set of avenger accomplices; I had just felt so comfortable, confident and able…

It wasn’t until I stepped out of the way of my own self; put my worries and anxieties aside to nurture my dreams that I felt able to feel an honest safety in myself and my people. Finding this sort of “Eden” right under my nose in my own strengths and special qualities is the first major thing I hope to pass on to my fellow humans floating through this universe. It’s all inside of us and we’ve always been enough, that’s how me and my art feels existing right now.”

8-year-old Elle raises money to support homeless people with new Christmas single

Capturing the heart of the Country with her beautiful new single ‘It’s Christmas’, Elle is only 8-years-old, but proves that talent can be found at any age.

A percentage of all money raised from downloads goes directly to the charity Shelter. With the added songwriting talent of Elle’s hairdresser Saab Vancootan, the heartfelt Christmas single will melt your heart this Christmas with its powerful message.

On her emotive new single, Elle mentioned, “I just hope this song makes people think about homeless people this Christmas. It must be horrible to live on the streets and I just want to try and help them more if I can. Thank you to everyone who supports this fundraising campaign.”

Max Newton, head of community fundraiser for Shelter said, “It’s been a year of unbelievable difficulty for many people. The impact of the pandemic means that many people are facing homelessness for the first time; some will be forced to sleep on the streets this winter. Shelter is working hard to help those who are worst affected – but as growing numbers of people need our support, we need the support of the public.

Using a simple approach to convey the story, whenever you see the lyric ‘It’s Christmas’, you won’t only be thinking of Noddy Holder from Slade anymore.

We need more humans like Elle…

Anita Gabrielle unveils ‘research EP’ into Parkinson’s Disease with Grammy-Award winning collaborator

Released on December 7th, singer-songwriter Anita Gabrielle teams up with Grammy-award winning Amy Wadge (best known for her songwriting collaborations with Ed Sheeran) in her new EP ‘Just Neat‘.

With leading single ‘Best Friends’ out today, Anita’s music draws influence from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox and Carole King. An artist in her own right, the EP has drawn inspiration from her brother Michael, who lives with Parkinson’s Disease. Raising both awareness and funds for the disease, ‘Just Neat’ is an honest and heartfelt EP.

Opening track ‘Best Friends‘ pulls at the heartstrings with a strong emotive theme throughout. Recorded on a 1990s 8 track, but produced and mixed using the best modern day technology by Ben Garraway, ‘Best Friends’ acts as a shoulder to cry on during the world’s current darkness.

Avenue Louise‘ feels like an instant classic from the get-go. Armed with a strong orchestral arrangement, Anita’s distinctive vocals soar with guidance.

I Want To Go Outside Again‘ is the most relatable track on the whole release. Bathed in memorable hooks as well as new territory for the EP, the familiar number feels close to home right about now.

Got You Covered‘ has a subtle Eva Cassidy vibe to it’s arrangement, and that’s never a bad thing. Completely refreshing and one of the strongest tracks on the EP, this tune is simply elegant.

EP-closer ‘Dance Through Life’ keeps the strong momentum going, and features a pulsating drum beat that leaves listeners wanting more from it’s passionate folk attire.

Turning the world’s current darkness into light, ‘Just Neat’ is a breathtaking release from Anita Gabrielle.

Vanderocker releases new psychedelic indie EP ‘The Good Punk’

Adrienne Vanderocker aka the mastermind behind indie music project Vanderocker returns with an exotic new EP. Titled ‘The Good Punk‘, the EP features four brand-new numbers bathed in psychedelia, indie, electro-pop with experimental touches and one instrumental bonus track.

Touching upon themes of sex, voyeurism and duality, Vanderocker collaborates with producer Brandon Eggleston on the release. With a string of note-worthy guest artists on the EP too – Federico Pol Jr (Joe Cocker), Peter Holmström (The Dandy Warhols, PIA) and Brendan Bond (Black Pumas) all feature on the new release.

An eccentric record which showcases that experimental music is far from over, if anything, it’s still at the beginning of its realm.

On the new soundtrack, Vanderocker states, “In my mind, it’s a basic study of humans on different levels, almost from an Alien National Geographic kind of perspective. ‘Here is Earth, a most beautiful place and here are the alluring creatures who call themselves human beings. Let’s observe them when they are just in their bodies.

Now look how they change when they interact with other groups’ – like a typical lab observation, right? Which is interesting in itself; but then of course, we have to look at how amazingly powerful humans can be when they disengage from the drama and plug into something bigger than themselves. I find comfort in all of it, when I can step back and observe us the way a newcomer might.”

Released via Mint 400 Records, ‘The Good Punk’ is a versatile soundscape with a large amount of vibrance to it’s core. Vanderocker is definitely an artist that you should keep on your playlists from here on out.

Introducing: Mark Shepherd

Mark Shepherd has been a regular on the live circuit for years, playing to audiences in the UK to New York, Texas and San Francisco. Given his ability to move audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, it seems the time is ripe for him to replicate his live success on a general release.

‘The Grand Scheme of Things’ EP is his follow-up from his debut ‘Bad Man’, which made more than a few waves in the folk/country scene, being played on the BBC and community stations across the pond. The new release displays the same flair for storytelling that his fans have come to expect, and will no doubt charm audiences who haven’t yet had the pleasure of hearing the British ‘Tom Petty’.

Unique to ‘The Grand Scheme of Things’ is it’s offer of two distinct aural paths to listeners, with the EP containing both acoustic and electronic versions of each tracks, the perfect choice for an artist whose music is all about mood and emotion. Paired with Shepherd’s whisky soaked vocals, the album displays that quintessential country ability to deliver bittersweet truths in a medium that resonates across demographic boundaries.
