ShoDem returns with ‘ShoDem Records presents…ShoDem’ EP May 5th

Bright young entrepreneur collaborates with some of the UK’s top up and coming stars

Following the success of previous track ‘Cheque Me’, featuring London MC Beluga Ice, ShoDem Records returns in May with a new, six track EP, which addition includes bonus mixes from ShoDem Ent DJ Kapz.

The brainchild and versatile music maker ‘Sose’ (aka Sammy Sose), has further developed ShoDem Records creating an innovative project designed to work with a variety of UK artists and deliver original, raw and exciting UK talent and music under SMG. And for this EP he has gathered together three talented artists who he is looking to develop in their respective music careers.

The lead track and EP opener ‘My Time’ (video in the making) is a rhythmic hip-hop track featuring the voice of female vocalist and rapper Honey the first Lady of ShoDem SMG. Built on a foundation of effective looped electronic sounds, the lyrics portray an artist grabbing opportunity with both hands striving toward the music career that lays ahead. Honey is unlike many other female Mc’s feminine in her ways she keeps her lyrics relevant and relatable.

After opening the EP, Honey also goes on to appear on two more tracks – ‘Welcome2the Floor’ and ‘Hold You Down’. A proud artist on the rise, the ShoDem EP represents Honey’s first, confident steps into the music industry.

Two more tracks on the EP, ‘More Girls More Cars More Weed’ and ‘Drinks on Me’ feature another up and coming talent in Steffy Dizzle. Having started rapping at the age of 18, Steffy was recently contacted by producers for TV series The Voice, turning them down to build his own career. Already an experienced performer, his talents also saw him appear on TV show Limelight UK, as well as picking up plaudits from the radio community.

Last but not least, the final track on the album is the aforementioned track ‘Cheque Me’, featuring Beluga Ice. With an extremely catchy hook and relatable lyrics – depicting a talented man who could have it all, as long as he stops being lazy and works for it – the track turned plenty of heads on its original release earlier this year.

You can still catch the ‘Cheque Me’ video here:

ShoDem Ent are also coming to a club near you, as their signing of DJ Kapz blesses the dance floors of West London from Barracuda Ealing to The Slug and Lettuce Uxbridge to name but a couple of his home hubs. Bashment to House to Commercial Chart, DJ Kapz is versatile in his approach and plays personally to his audience. DJ Kapz is ready to ShoDem how it’s done…

With plenty of collaborators and very strong tracks, ShoDem Records have put together an EP to be proud of. ‘ShoDem Records Presents…ShoDem’ will be available from May 5th.

Veronica Brown ‘I Don’t Wanna Be a Sinner’ single out April 15th 2014

Single, feat. DJ John, taken from the ‘Come Quickly’ album, released next year

With a voice described by Billboard magazine as one that “exudes raw, soulful charisma”, Detroit born singer Veronica Brown releases her debut UK single on April 15th, which will also be available to download Worldwide.

Describing herself as a non-denominational Christian, ‘I Don’t Wanna Be A Sinner’ is a great example of how she focuses her faith into her lyrics. A funky blend of hip-hop and pop, featuring rap by DJ John, the track is mastered by Grammy award winning Erick Labson, chief engineer at Universal Mastering Studios.

The collaboration with Labson adds to an already impressive roll call of contributors Veronica has worked with – including Michael J. Powell (producer for eight time Grammy Award winner Anita Baker), Steve King (engineer for Eminem, 50 Cent, Aretha Franklin) and Paul Riser (string arranger for Motown records and more recently R Kelly). Alongside these successes, Veronica has also had her work remixed by the likes of Junior Vasquez, Stonebridge and Nick Nice.

With all that experience behind her, ‘I Don’t Wanna Be a Sinner’ sees a slightly new direction for the vocalist, whose previous work has been more dance-pop oriented. This is the first step in a new, gospel influenced journey. Her previous dance tracks were highly successful however, reaching #1 in the MixMag dance charts, and #12 on the Billboard Dance in the US. They were also remixed by top acts Mousse T and Welcome.

It’s just the latest development in a truly impressive career. In addition to her work with the vaunted names above, Veronica was awarded the Key to the City of Detroit after touring and performing for overseas US troops, and named Ambassador for the State of Michigan.

She also performed in Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young’s final term Campaign Commercial entitled ‘Power for Tomorrow’ with none other than the ‘Queen of Soul ‘ Aretha Franklin. She requested for Veronica to perform beside her due to her exceptional pitch – a huge honor and pleasure for Brown – a former resident of the Motor City and one of the latest artist to add to its Musical Legacy.

Hot on the heels of his recent No1 hit on MTV Hive in the USA, Ankit Love is returning with new pop single ‘Spill the Milky Way’

Produced by Matt Walters (Shola Ama, Matt Goss, Soul Unique, Finlay Quay, Boy George, Peter Andre), the romantic single is a layered pop tune with an ambitious video taking in a jewellery heist and a city black out designed to put an end to light pollution and illuminate his love by starlight.

But a successful music career just isn’t enough for Ankit Love – one of the most ambitious and hard working creatives at the moment, he has many strings to his bow.

In addition to his music, Ankit heads up his own fashion label AU79, and has worked closely with his friend, fashion designer Nicole Coste on her label branding and new store on Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge.  He  also works as a film and music video director. His latest project will see him direct his own script – a high fashion version of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ set in British India.
On top of all that, Ankit even found time to work as Editor in Chief for fashion and science magazine MIST, and is now Editor-at-Large for international culture magazine BRIC. His works have put him at the forefront of the new artistic movement termed ‘Metamodernism’ –  which oscillates between the divergent aesthetics such as the idealisim of Romanticism and the pragmatism of post-modernism.

All of this seems minor though compared to his most ambitious project: Unicorn White C.I.C. Using crowd funding, Ankit Love is hoping to fund a mission to Mars! Working on the basis that, if everyone in the UK signed up, or less than 1% of the world to a (£1.65) €2  per month subscription, 65 million people would raise the £5.8 billion (€7 billion) necessary to fund the launch of return flight by 2022!

So there you have it – a musician literally reaching for the stars!

Armand Margjeka LP ‘Hummingbird’ release June 10th

2nd album to be released through PIPEANDGUN Recorders

Created by cherry picking the ten best tracks from a collection of almost 100 recordings, the new album Hummingbird from Albanian indie folk pop artist will be released by PIPEANDGUN Recorders this Summer.

Produced by Margjeka with the aid of a team including three time Grammy award winner Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Beck, Outkast, Gnarls Barkley), Chris Steffen (Stereophonics, Ben Harper) and Eric Masse (Escondido, Robert Ellis), the collection marks a real step forward for Margjeka – the result of his most creative and mature recording sessions yet.

Brought up with a love for Western rock’n’roll and inspired by pop legends Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis to 1990’s MTV Europe, Armand Margjeka’s musical influences were drip fed during his formative years as Western music slowly made its way into a country still reeling from the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Margjeka released his debut solo album Margo Margo in 2011. “I want to do music without any preconceived parameters. I like to combine unexpected elements in my music. Margo Margo is completely honest and shows the directions I want to pursue in my song writing and playing.”

Armand Margjeka’s sophomore release Hummingbird represents a series of creative recording sessions and marks a new high for this promising indie songwriter.

Shattered Generation fall ‘Out of Line’ with new single

Rock group set to release new single May 26th

Based in Nottingham, four piece glam rock group Shattered Generation are looking to make 2014 their breakthrough year.

Their new single ‘Out of Line’ could well be the track to do it, opening with an astonishing, complex guitar riff before giving way to chunky distorted chords and solid rock rhythms and vocals.

This is excellent, fun rock inspired by the hits of the 80s, an environment where Shattered Generation find themselves more than comfortable and which has allowed them to play alongside Guns 2 Roses (the largest Guns’n’Roses’ tribute band) as well as with fellow up and comers The Peckham Cowboys and The Brink.

Their songs have drawn plenty of attention, not least legendary producers Dito Godwin (Motley Crue, No Doubt) and Jon Moon (Pink Floyd, Bryan Adams), who have both had a hand in their new material. And with the support of these two heavyweights, their sound will likely continue to grow and mature.

It’s all the more impressive considering that lead vocalist Johnny, notable for his energetic on stage performances, has a heart condition which necessitated the insertion of a pace maker last year.

Now though, with that enforced break behind them, Shattered Generation are going from strength to strength – as signalled by this great new single.

If you’d like to hear more from the guys, listen to their previous single ‘Young, Wild N Free’ here:

Shattered Generation:

Johnny Wildheart (vocals)

Lexi Black (lead guitar)

Acie Wilson (bass guitar)

Jonno Gosling (drums)

From Beenie Man to Giggs; the story of Rising R&B star Alyssa English

Alyssa English will release her debut single on May 16th ahead of her forthcoming EP called ‘Girlfriend’, to be released May 26th.

Alyssa English is starting to be very well known in UK R&B circles. She has collaborated with dancehall giants Beenie Man and Maxi Priest and also recorded a track with the Award winning UK rapper Giggs, which will be on her forthcoming EP. Given the calibre of these artists and the fact that Alyssa is only a modest 18 years old, she’s definitely one to watch.

Alyssa was born in New York but later moved to Canada where she grew up in a world of music. Not only was she personally passionate but it ran in her family, as they were also musically oriented. Her uncle is in fact soul singer and songwriter Sam Dees, who wrote tracks for legends like Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston and George Benson.

Whilst Alyssa can play piano and flute (just to mention a couple), it was learning to sing that her talents were spotted by her then vocal coach. One thing lead to another and her coach put her in touch with Kofi  management where William Kofi went on to become her manager, who could see the potential in Alyssa’s voice. From then on she knew that a career in music was the only way she was going to go. At the age of 15 she took the bold decision to move to the UK to follow her musical ambitions, and it seems that this was definitely the right choice! This was actually what influenced the ‘Girlfriend’ track.

Alyssa’s title EP track ‘Girlfriend’ takes a lot musically from the likes of Jason Derulo, JoJo and other R&B stars. In making the track, Alyssa came together with top industry producer Livingstone Brown (Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Shakira), who also helped to co-write the EP, Mike Stephens (Musical Director for Take That) and Luke Smith (an infamous session musician who’s worked with the likes of George Michael to Chaka Khan) for the final product.

Having completed a tour of UK schools so far, she is destined for bigger things with this new release so make sure to keep an eye out! Watch the video for the lead track ‘Girlfriend’ here:

The Reads set to make waves with new album ‘Lost at Sea’

With a sound which has been compared to the likes of Elbow & Doves, The Reads look to build on successful 2011 LP ‘Stories from the Border’

After gaining support from Radio 2 and XFM and being named BBC Radio Wales single of the week four times with songs from their debut album, ambient-indie-electronica six-piece The Reads release follow up ‘Lost At Sea’ on April 21st.

Straddling the North Wales and England border, the band has grown from four members to six since their original founding in 2000. Working hard to find a distinctive sound, they spent years honing their material before finally releasing their debut album ‘Stories from the Border’ in 2011. It was time well spent, as their mix of spaced out production and indie-folk-rock melodies made an immediate impact.

Now they are ready to unleash the follow up, ‘Lost at Sea’, and although the individual songs are as strong as ever, it is very much written as a cohesive album. Keen not to let the album format fall by the wayside in a market dominated by singles and individual song downloads, this is the work of a band working hard to maintain a consistent sound throughout.

Produced and mixed by Jim Spencer (The Charlatans, The Vaccines, New Order) and mastered by Frank Arkwright (Arcade Fire, The Smiths, Joy Division), this 10 song collection marks a genuine step forward for The Reads, who are working to ‘find a home’ for their distinctive sound. And with over a decade of strong songwriting behind them, we wouldn’t bet against it.

Debut single from electro-classical artist NEOLEKTRA

Album: Birth of a Heroine (3rd June, 2014)

Single: Immortals (20th May, 2014)

Although this may be Neolektra’s first ever solo release, she is hardly new to the world of music. She has already performed as herself (Naomi Tagg) with huge artists like Elton John, Celine Deon and John Legend, and has performed for Richard Branson and Peter Gabriel.  Her background is also in producing dramatic and emotional music for visuals, predominantly for advertisers. Her past clients include giants like BMW, Mercedes and Google, along with many more, so she certainly knows how to conjure emotions and capture an audience.

From childhood Naomi has been immersed in musical variety. She grew up in Cape Town, South Africa with 5 siblings, all of whom played at least 3 instruments and a great great grandmother who played the harp for Queen Victoria! The fierce competition to learn and improve drove Naomi to excel at a young age.

She inevitably rose through the traditional ranks of classical music; playing in orchestras, learning how to assemble music professionally and eventually earning herself a scholarship to study music at the University of Cape Town. Neolektra’s real musical character came out of rebellion, however, as she decided to quit her degree before finishing. She hated the formality and structures surrounding the classical world and decided to create something fresh, something which really resonated with her own character and what she loved.

What came about in the following decade was her quest to create a new sound for the violin, to give it a new identity. Rather than stemming from any one particular inspiration, it has been an exploration of the modern violin, from jazz to rock, dance music and soundtrack. The result of which, after many years, is her album ‘Birth of a Heroine’.

Her classical music upbringing has allowed her to create an orchestrally rich album, diverse in genre and instrumentation. Her music is expansive and feels like it is exploring new parameters in traditional music classifications. Indeed, one of the aims of the song and album generally was to take the listener on a musical journey and hope that they come out the rabbit hole with a fresh perspective on music.
